There he has written about race, politics, and culture, much as he did for VIBE, <em>The Source<\/em>, <em>The Village Voice<\/em>, and other publications for over thirty-five years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As an expert covering hip-hop culture<\/strong>, he has been quoted in <em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em>, <em>The New York Times<\/em>, on National Public Radio, MTV, VH-1, CNN, the BBC, and other information channels. Others know him for his long-time association with the seminal band <strong>Public Enemy<\/strong>, and for his widely-heard &#8220;cameo&#8221; on their classic record, &#8220;Don&#8217;t Believe the Hype.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Allen serves as an advisor to the <strong>Archives of African American Music and Culture (AAAMC)<\/strong> at Indiana University. From 2003-15, he was the <strong>host\/producer of the weekly WBAI-NY\/99.5 FM radio show, NONFICTION.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Harry Allen worked in the crisis p.r. \/ public affairs department of computer entertainment giant <strong>Rockstar Games<\/strong> from 2004-2006. (He considers his credit on the hit title <em>Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas<\/em> his proudest byline.) His early and singular research on\u00a0<strong>architectural design in computer and video games<\/strong> has\u00a0been recognized by the <strong>Graham Foundation<\/strong>, the <strong>Smithsonian Institution\u2019s Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation<\/strong>, the <strong>New York State Council on the Arts<\/strong>, the <strong>Architectural League of New York<\/strong>, and the <strong>MacDowell Colony<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Allen lectures at colleges and universities around the country, speaking about \u00a0documentary photos he made of Public Enemy&#8217;s members before the band was formed. This talk, <strong><em>Shooting The Enemy<\/em><\/strong>, features images that have been shown in documentaries and magazines. Many of them are also\u00a0now part of the <strong>Smithsonian Institution\u2019s National Museum of African American History and Culture<\/strong>&#8216;s permanent collection.<\/p>\n<p>Allen is a 2X (2017, 2025) Nasir Jones Hip-Hop Fellow at <strong>Harvard University<\/strong>.\u00a0He is also a 2020 CAST (Center for Arts, Science, and Technology) Visiting Artist at\u00a0<strong>M.I.T., <\/strong>and a 2026 Visiting Scholar in the MLK Visiting Professors and Scholars Program at M.I.T.<\/p>\n<p>Allen recently founded <strong>HARD: Harry Allen R&amp;D<\/strong>, a boutique for developing &#8220;singular and outrageous&#8221; projects.
