When the camera pulled in for a close-up, <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/olympics\/beijing\/blog\/fourth_place_medal\/post\/The-mystery-of-the-hot-Paraguayan-solved-?urn=oly,99910\"  target=\"_blank\">all a planetful of horny guys wanted to know is<\/a>, <em>Who is <\/em>that<em>? What is her sport?<\/em> and <em>Does it show a <\/em>lot<em> of skin?<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/las-del-uni-019.jpg\" title=\"\u201cWell, at least I\u2019m not in 52nd place.\u201d\" alt=\"\u201cWell, at least I\u2019m not in 52nd place.\u201d\" align=\"right\" width=\"300\" \/>As it turns out, her name is Leryn Franco, she&#8217;s 26, from Paraguay, and throwing the javelin shows more skin than gymnastics, though less than beach volleyball.<\/p>\n<p>As it also turns out, she wasn&#8217;t really all that good at what she did, placing 51st in her field. Throwing a 600g spear isn&#8217;t how Franco makes her money.<\/p>\n<p>This is:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/lerynfranco02ek7.jpg\"  title=\"Nice medal.\"><img src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/lerynfranco02ek7.jpg\" title=\"Nice medals.\" alt=\"Nice medals.\" align=\"middle\" width=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Franco, herself, told <em>Reuters<\/em>, &#8220;Modelling is a way for me to continue with my sport, the hours are flexible, and you can earn good money through photographic modelling and the catwalk.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m gonna go out on a limb and guess, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pbase.com\/crespoide\/personal_2007_calendar\"  target=\"_blank\">from what I&#8217;ve seen<\/a>, that Miss Franco is kinda doing O.K. on her day job. Plus, it sure beats a lifetime of second-guessing one&#8217;s self, post- the Games, and asking, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/08\/18\/sports\/olympics\/18psych.html\"  target=\"_blank\">&#8220;What do I do next with my life?&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But what&#8217;s most remarkable to me about all this is the degree to which sexuality is an unspoken part of the way athletes, media, advertisers, and the Games themselves market the Olympics.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, the web is filled with fans ranking their favorite world-class competition babes, like this collection of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webtvhub.com\/the-50-most-beautiful-women-of-the-2008-beijing-olympics-sexy-athletic-girls-pictures-and-videos\/\"  target=\"_blank\">&#8220;The 50 Most Beautiful Women of the 2008 Beijing Olympics,&#8221;<\/a> which introduced me to the fine work and fit physique of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webtvhub.com\/gro-hammerseng-pics-and-vid-sexy-handball-star-of-the-beijing-olympics-44th-hottest-girl\/\"  target=\"_blank\">Norwegian handball captain Gro Hammerseng<\/a>. (Is handball even <em>in<\/em> the Olympics? You&#8217;d never know it watching NBC.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/ob-ca391_0811ph_20080811000328.jpg\"  title=\"Touch it\u2026why don\u2019cha\u2026\"><img src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/ob-ca391_0811ph_20080811000328.jpg\" title=\"Touch it\u2026why don\u2019cha\u2026\" alt=\"Touch it\u2026why don\u2019cha\u2026\" align=\"right\" width=\"250\" \/><\/a>But my point is that this is increasingly the purview of mainstream and official channels, it seems. Take the shot seen round the world of Michael Phelps celebrating his 4&#215;100-meter freestyle relay gold, right. Or consider an image taken by the amazing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.danwintersphoto.com\/\"  target=\"_blank\">Dan Winters<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2008\/07\/29\/sports\/playmagazine\/20080803_ICONS_FEATURE.html\"  target=\"_blank\">a 46-year-old Nadia Comaneci<\/a>, blasting a missile across the bow for cougars everywhere, below. The bodies of athletes, and the unspoken potential of those bodies in motion, if you receive my meaning, always seem to faintly surround the Games, beckoning distantly like sirens&#8217; songs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2008\/07\/29\/sports\/playmagazine\/20080803_ICONS_FEATURE.html\"  target=\"_blank\" title=\"I\u2019ll tumble for ya\u2026.\"><img src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/screen21.jpg\" title=\"I\u2019ll tumble for ya\u2026.\" alt=\"I\u2019ll tumble for ya\u2026.\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Though not so softly, more and more. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcolympics.com\/getinthegames\/news\/newsid=218497.html\"  target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Who&#8217;s the fairest of them all?&#8221;<\/a>, NBC asked on their web site, in a piece about the hotness of athletes, supplemented, as fits a corporate behemoth, by the tamest of pictures. (Even Swimmer Amanda Beard, who seems far too eager to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=get+one\" s+kit+off\" target=\"_blank\">get her kit off<\/a>, doing so for both Playboy and PETA, appears in a modest evening dress, though I&#8217;m almost sure I can see her nipples through it.) <a href=\"http:\/\/sports.espn.go.com\/espn\/page3\/story?page=boswell\/040823\"  target=\"_blank\">This 2004 ESPN.com piece<\/a> questioned the increasing visibility of athletes in &#8220;lad mags,&#8221; like FHM and <em>Maxim<\/em>. Says the author,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> As a woman, and former college athlete, I should be more affected and have stronger opinions on this topic. And looking around, I can&#8217;t help but wonder why others aren&#8217;t more upset as well.<\/p>\n<p>Has American culture come to this? Are sex and sports so commonly intertwined that FHM and Playboy have essentially become a sexier version of a Wheaties box?<\/p>\n<p>I guess so.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In Germany, Four Olympic sportswomen are the covers\u2014one for each athlete\u2014in that nation&#8217;s September edition of <em>Playboy<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/lifestyleMolt\/idUSLD31965020080813\"  target=\"_blank\">Reuters reported<\/a>.<span id=\"midArticle_byline\"><\/span><span id=\"midArticle_0\"><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Sailor Petra Niemann, hockey striker Katharina Scholz, canoeist Nicole Reinhardt and judo fighter Romy Tarangul will add their names to the growing list of athletes getting their kit off for cash or a cause.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cashing in on this interest pre-the Games, Coca-Cola Great Britain, &#8220;as part of an advertising campaign for Powerade, the official sports drink of the Beijing Games,&#8221; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1041069\/Naked-ambition-Britains-Olympians-strip-prepare-make-history-Beijing.html\"  target=\"_blank\">shot these pictures of nude British athletes<\/a>, cresting with this power shot of rower-turned-cyclist Rebecca Romero, below:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1041069\/Naked-ambition-Britains-Olympians-strip-prepare-make-history-Beijing.html\"  target=\"_blank\" title=\"Pedal faster!\"><img src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/article-1041069-022746a300000578-228_468x286.jpg\" title=\"Pedal faster!\" alt=\"Pedal faster!\" align=\"middle\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As <em>The Daily Mail<\/em>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-1041069\/Naked-ambition-Britains-Olympians-strip-prepare-make-history-Beijing.html\"  target=\"_blank\">which ran the pictures<\/a>, wrote, quoting Cathryn Sleight, marketing director for Coca-Cola Great Britain,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8216;Everyone is used to seeing athletes in competition or winning, but we wanted to give people the chance to see the real make-up of an athlete and their muscle and power, celebrating the body and spirit and the hard work that goes into training for all athletes whatever your level.&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Oh-<em>kayyyy<\/em>. So, if Coca-Cola is doing this\u2014in Great Britain, mind you; it would never fly here\u2014is this trend, thus, already pass\u00e9?<\/p>\n<p>Richard Deitsch, associate editor at <em>Sports Illustrated<\/em>&#8216;s website, told <em>Reuters<\/em> that &#8220;the taboo of posing for <em>Playboy<\/em> or modelling has started to wane.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> But Deitsch said for hard-core sports fans the appearance or sex appeal of an athlete might make them more interesting, but only if they were winning at their sport.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_4\"><\/span> He said two good examples of sports stars who had used their looks to build a brand were English footballer David Beckham and Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_5\"><\/span>    &#8220;Ultimately it does not get away from the fact that you have to be an athlete first and a beauty second,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"midArticle_6\"><\/span>    &#8220;But when you have someone who is fantastic at both, then you are looking at a global brand.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/735790188phgmwmtcuadros5.jpg\"  title=\"\u201cWhere\u2019s my javelin?\u201d\"><img src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/08\/735790188phgmwmtcuadros5.jpg\" title=\"\u201cWhere\u2019s my javelin?\u201d\" alt=\"\u201cWhere\u2019s my javelin?\u201d\" align=\"right\" width=\"250\" \/><\/a>Right.
