It&#8217;s<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the sweetly belittling form of address that has always rankled older people: the doctor who talks to their child rather than to them about their health; the store clerk who assumes that an older person does not know how to work a computer, or needs to be addressed slowly or in a loud voice. Then there are those who address any elderly person as \u201cdear.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>My least favorite form of this practice is when a person refers to an obviously aged woman as &#8220;young lady.&#8221; However, overall,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><!--more--><img src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/looking-after-elderly-lady.jpg\" title=\"\u201cHow are we today?\u201d\" alt=\"\u201cHow are we today?\u201d\" align=\"right\" width=\"250\" \/>the worst offenders are often health care workers, said Kristine Williams, a nurse gerontologist and associate professor at the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/topics.nytimes.com\/top\/reference\/timestopics\/organizations\/u\/university_of_kansas\/index.html?inline=nyt-org\"  title=\"More articles about University of Kansas\">University of Kansas<\/a> School of Nursing.<\/p>\n<p>To study the effects of elderspeak on people with mild to moderate <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/disease\/dementia\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\"  title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about Dementia.\">dementia<\/a>, Dr. Williams and a team of researchers videotaped interactions in a nursing home between 20 residents and staff members. They found that when nurses used phrases like \u201cgood girl\u201d or \u201cHow are we feeling?\u201d patients were more aggressive and less cooperative or receptive to care. If addressed as infants, some showed their irritation by grimacing, screaming or refusing to do what staff members asked of them.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers, who will publish their findings in <em>The American Journal of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/disease\/alzheimers-disease\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\"  title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about Alzheimer's Disease.\">Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/a> and Other Dementias<\/em>, concluded that elderspeak sent a message that the patient was incompetent and \u201cbegins a negative downward spiral for older persons, who react with decreased self-esteem, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/health.nytimes.com\/health\/guides\/symptoms\/depression\/overview.html?inline=nyt-classifier\"  title=\"In-depth reference and news articles about Depression.\">depression<\/a>, withdrawal and the assumption of dependent behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Williams said health care workers often thought that using words like \u201cdear\u201d or \u201csweetie\u201d conveyed that they cared and made them easier to understand. \u201cBut they don\u2019t realize the implications,\u201d she said, \u201cthat it\u2019s also giving messages to older adults that they\u2019re incompetent.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A 68-year-old police psychologist from Northern California, Ellen Kirschman, shares my aforementioned distaste. She<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>said she objected to people calling her \u201cyoung lady,\u201d which she called \u201cmocking and disingenuous.\u201d She added: \u201cAs I get older, I don\u2019t want to be recognized for my age. I want to be recognized for my accomplishments, for my wisdom.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>What I love, however, is the way she deals with the slight.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>To avoid stereotyping, Ms. Kirschman said, she often sprinkles her conversation with profanities when she is among people who do not know her. \u201cThat makes them think, This is someone to be reckoned with,\u201d she said. \u201cA little sharpness seems to help.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Cops: Ya just <em>gotta<\/em> love &#8217;em.<\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The New York Times zooms in on a little-discussed mode by which people, often unconsciously, abuse senior citizens, namely elderspeak.
