{"id":187,"date":"2008-03-10T16:50:38","date_gmt":"2008-03-10T21:50:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/?p=187"},"modified":"2009-11-22T19:11:27","modified_gmt":"2009-11-23T00:11:27","slug":"when-you-said-that-youd-bring-some-passion-back-to-albany-this-wasnt-exactly-what-we-had-in-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/?p=187","title":{"rendered":"When You Said That You&#8217;d &#8220;Bring Some Passion Back To Albany,&#8221; This Wasn&#8217;t Exactly What We Had In Mind."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img title=\"The Spitzer Ad\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/screen8.jpg\" alt=\"The Spitzer Ad\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m almost religiously unmoved by political advertising, which, I&#8217;m sure like, many, I usually find boring beyond rote; usually no more than talking points with pictures.<\/p>\n<p>However, when I saw <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ZBss945ejiY\"  target=\"_blank\">this 2006 campaign ad<\/a> during Eliot Spitzer&#8217;s run for governor of New York State, it almost took my breath away.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As newspaper clippings hailing Spitzer&#8217;s legendary, almost righteous zeal as state attorney general\u2014what CBS2 news&#8217; Andrew Kurtzman rightly called his &#8220;stellar reputation for integrity&#8221;\u2014zoomed from our near field of vision into the stratosphere, a cloud, a massive volume of words championing his sterling record overwhelms the sky. When the light is completely blackened, suddenly clarity from the darkness:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Now, just imagine what he&#8217;d do as your governor.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Spitzer for Governor.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve never seen an advertisement for a politician so perfectly, wordlessly even, encapsulate both the aura of an elected leader and the possibilities of his higher service. It was actually inspiring.<\/p>\n<p>Now this.<\/p>\n<p><img title=\"Spitzer NY Times coverage\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/spitzer-ny-times.jpg\" alt=\"Spitzer NY Times coverage\" width=\"500\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Should Spitzer resign, his Black lieutenant governor, David Paterson, would succeed him. Paterson is legally blind and well-known to long-time residents of Harlem like myself, from his years representing us in the state senate. Paterson would be the first African-American head of the state ever, and perhaps the first legally blind governor in U.S. history.<\/p>\n<p>Spitzer, meanwhile, now possesses what is probably the highest expectations-to-disappointment ratio of any politician in recent memory, in New York or elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>His governorship had been something short of a wreck, as he attempted to get across unpopular causes. But it looks like what has ultimately undone him is not &#8220;Troopergate,&#8221; or driver&#8217;s licenses for illegal immigrants, but constituent Temeka Rachelle Lewis, 32, of Brooklyn, serving him as he acted out his role, not as governor but, as &#8220;Client-9&#8221;:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/03\/screen15.jpg\" alt=\"Client-9\u2026difficult, it seems\" width=\"500\" height=\"373\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is a very dark day in New York State government.<\/p>\n<p><object class=\"embed\" width=\"425\" height=\"264\" type=\"application\/x-shockwave-flash\" \ndata=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZBss945ejiY?fs=1\"><param name=\"wmode\" value=\"transparent\" \/><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/ZBss945ejiY?fs=1\" \/><em>You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video<\/em><\/object><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m almost religiously unmoved by political advertising, which, I&#8217;m sure like, many, I usually find boring beyond rote; usually no more than talking points with pictures.
