{"id":3580,"date":"2009-05-13T10:53:40","date_gmt":"2009-05-13T14:53:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/?p=3580"},"modified":"2009-05-13T10:53:40","modified_gmt":"2009-05-13T14:53:40","slug":"is-this-baby-a-future-ceoyes-if-by-future-you-mean-the-beginning-of-next-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/?p=3580","title":{"rendered":"Is This Baby a Future CEO?<br\/>Yes, If By &#8220;Future&#8221; You Mean the Beginning of Next Week."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3581\" title=\"cbdf_black_baby_jpeg\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/cbdf_black_baby_jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"cbdf_black_baby_jpeg\" width=\"250\" height=\"264\" \/>Just when you thought that the dreamlike logic of white supremacy couldn\u2019t produce any further absurdities, the Caucasians drag another one out of the cornfield: <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/print?id=7535411\"  target=\"_blank\">According to the Associated Press<\/a>, a study, conducted by Northwestern University\u2019s Kellogg School of Management, to be published in the September edition of the journal, <em>Psychological Science<\/em>, has concluded that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Black Fortune 500 CEOs with a \u201cbabyface\u201d appearance are more likely to <span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-3593\" title=\"0508ceo1\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/0508ceo1.jpg\" alt=\"0508ceo1\" width=\"150\" height=\"201\" \/><\/span>lead companies with higher revenues and prestige than Black CEOs who look more mature, an upcoming study says.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">In contrast with research showing that white executives are hindered by babyface characteristics, a disarming appearance can help Black CEOs by counteracting the stigma that Black men are threatening\u2026.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>As the AP notes,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">A babyface is characterized by combinations <\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3604\" title=\"stanoneal\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/stanoneal-298x300.gif\" alt=\"stanoneal\" width=\"175\" height=\"177\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/stanoneal-298x300.gif 298w, http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/stanoneal.gif 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\">of attributes, including a round face, full cheeks, larger forehead, small nose, large ears and full lips, the study says.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You know: The kind of visage typified by folks like American Express CEO Kenneth Chenault, above; E. Stanley O\u2019Neal, right, former CEO of Merrill Lynch; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackvoices.com\/workmonmain\/workmonmain_canv\/bvi\/_a\/the-highest-paid-black-ceos\/20050419125509990001\"  target=\"_blank\">almost everybody in this 2005 list of Black CEOs<\/a>; or by this famed board chairman, after the jump:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><!--more--><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3595 aligncenter\" title=\"Uncle Ben, Executive\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/screen9.jpg\" alt=\"Uncle Ben, Executive\" width=\"500\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/screen9.jpg 439w, http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/screen9-300x246.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Robert Livingston, who is a co-author of the study and an assistant professor of organizations and management at Kellogg, says<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the study indicates that &#8220;disarming&#8221; characteristics, which have been shown to hinder white executives, can help black leaders.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Physical appearance, how you behave, having mixed-race parents \u2014 anything that conveys to whites &#8216;I&#8217;m not the typical black man&#8217; can be helpful,&#8221; Livingston said.<\/p>\n<p>That leads to the idea that black executives face a double standard, he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you&#8217;re a white male, you can exhibit anger, pound your fist, make ultimatums &#8230; African-Americans have to adopt a kinder, gentler style of leadership,&#8221; Livingston said. &#8220;The same sorts of behaviors that are effective for white males can&#8217;t be utilized effectively by black males.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Livingston said his conclusion is not that babyface black CEOs reached the pinnacle of success because of their looks: &#8220;I&#8217;m saying that African-American leaders have to adopt certain qualities or behaviors that make them appear less threatening &#8230; a babyface gives a certain perception that they&#8217;re docile.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-3611\" title=\"barackobama\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/barackobama-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"barackobama\" width=\"125\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/barackobama-222x300.jpg 222w, http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/barackobama.jpg 444w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/>Physical appearance.
