By that point, it had become clear that <em>acquired immune deficiency syndrome<\/em>, or AIDS, was not going to be a flash in the pan\u2014a temporary blip that the company could just ride out\u2014but would be, in fact, the disease of the century, if not the millennium.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=\"http:\/\/oldmagazineads.blogspot.com\/2007\/07\/1953-ayds-diet-pills-magazine-ad-yvonne.html\" title=\"\u201cI swear by Ayds!\u201d\"  target=\"_blank\"><img title=\"\u201cI swear by Ayds!\u201d\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/ayds.jpg\" alt=\"\u201cI swear by Ayds!\u201d\" width=\"175\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>Ayds enjoyed a long and respectable run, having been manufactured since the late 1930s. It was prominently endorsed in the postwar era by celebrities like actors Zsa Zsa Gabor, Yvonne deCarlo, right, Hedy Lamar, and ice skater Sonja Henie.<\/p>\n<p>AIDS started to creep into public awareness around the middle of 1981. Yet, in that pre-web, pre-blogosphere age, as late as 1983, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/printout\/0,8816,926056,00.html\"  target=\"_blank\">according to TIME,<\/a> retailers could still say with a straight face that<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>the disease is not hurting the product. Says Elliot Dworkin, vice president of Revco D.S. Inc., which operates 1,661 drugstores in 28 states: &#8220;Ayds sales have never been better.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Eeww<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Plus, to make matters even worse, not only did the candy&#8217;s and the disease&#8217;s names sound identical, but the tag lines Ayds had traditionally used in their commercials&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ayds helps you lose weight&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Why take diet pills when you can enjoy Ayds?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ayds helped me get back into a size 6&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Ayds helps control your appetite&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.museumofhoaxes.com\/hoax\/weblog\/comments\/3998\/\" title=\"YUM!!\"  target=\"_blank\"><img title=\"YUM!!\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/ayds-candy.jpg\" alt=\"YUM!!\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>&#8230;seemed to make cruel mockery of the horrifying   <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wasting\" title=\"Wasting\" >wasting<\/a> associated with having HIV. Try watching <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=yfFs0o6pCxc\"  target=\"_blank\">this surreal, 1981 commercial<\/a>, released right about the time AIDS was creeping into public consciousness, or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=B10adrnAjWU\"  target=\"_blank\">this one<\/a>, without grimacing.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, as is clear to all in hindsight, it was a fight Dep Corporation, the product&#8217;s manufacturer, could not win. In early 1988, <a href=\"http:\/\/query.nytimes.com\/gst\/fullpage.html?res=940DE2DE173DF937A35750C0A96E948260&amp;sec=&amp;spon=&amp;pagewanted=print\"  target=\"_blank\">they began to seek a new name for their candy<\/a>. <em>Diet Ayds<\/em> was tried for a while, but the damage had been done.
