{"id":483,"date":"2008-04-23T12:28:47","date_gmt":"2008-04-23T16:28:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/?p=483"},"modified":"2009-04-15T05:13:08","modified_gmt":"2009-04-15T09:13:08","slug":"and-a-pair-of-buck-teeth-pronto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/?p=483","title":{"rendered":"&#8230;And a Pair of Buck Teeth, Pronto!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BvSPgBP0PzE\" title=\"Racist ad\"  target=\"_blank\"><img title=\"Racist ad\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/screen84.jpg\" alt=\"Racist ad\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m surprised <a href=\"http:\/\/www.racialicious.com\"  target=\"_blank\"><em>Racialicious<\/em><\/a> hasn&#8217;t picked this apart, yet: Six Flags&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BvSPgBP0PzE\"  target=\"_blank\">&#8220;More Flags, More Fun!&#8221; campaign<\/a>, and its English-gargling Asian pitchman.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Who comes up with this crap <strong>[and, typically, this is where many people would insert the words &#8220;in 2008&#8221;]<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p>But I&#8217;ve long concluded that white supremacy is not receding, but <em>refining<\/em>; futuristic. Year-dates, thus, become merely a way of organizing information, like tabs in a filing cabinet drawer, not markers, necessarily, of &#8220;progress.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BoybqfQ6GsU\" title=\"Whooooooooooooo!!!\"  target=\"_blank\"><img title=\"Whooooooooooooo!!!\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/screen86.jpg\" alt=\"Whooooooooooooo!!!\" width=\"250\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>As may be obvious, &#8220;More Flags&#8221; is easily the worst depiction of an Asian person I&#8217;ve seen in advertising recently, and perhaps ever. Interestingly, it comes on the tail of what I&#8217;d argue is the best depiction of an Asian person in a commercial: The coffee shop denizen \/ land speed racer from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BoybqfQ6GsU\"  target=\"_blank\">Washington &#8220;WaMu&#8221; Mutual&#8217;s &#8220;Salt Flats&#8221; piece<\/a>, right. (I&#8217;d encourage you to visit the web site of Method, the efx house which posted the spot, where you can see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.methodstudios.com\/movie\/935.html\"  target=\"_blank\">a gorgeous HD version of it<\/a>, noting, perhaps for the first time, as I did, the rhinestones on the driver&#8217;s helmet.)<\/p>\n<p>One of the basic tests one has to run when looking at how people are portrayed, racially, in media is to ask, Would this still &#8220;make sense&#8221; if a person with a different racial classification was in this role?<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Make sense&#8221; doesn&#8217;t just mean <em>narratively<\/em>. It can also mean <em>historically<\/em>, <em>legally<\/em>, <em>socially<\/em>, or <em>traditionally<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=52FVcN-yKzo\" title=\"Does race matter?\"  target=\"_blank\"><img title=\"Does race matter?\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/04\/screen88.jpg\" alt=\"Does race matter?\" width=\"250\" align=\"right\" \/><\/a>So, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=52FVcN-yKzo\"  target=\"_blank\">Ikea&#8217;s 2002 &#8220;Moo Cow Milker&#8221; commercial<\/a>, right, for example, fails this test, and does so blatantly and miserably. Make the white male non-white, and the non-white woman white. (Indeed, in that near post-9\/11 era, make the white man a bearded Saudi.) For many white viewers, especially, the piece would cease to be advertising and enter the realm of <em>endurance<\/em>, bordering on <em>assault<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Both words, ironically, may describe what Asian people, watching the Six Flags ad, feel.
