(Made in an edition of three, plus an artist&#8217;s proof, one of the life-sized, 42 in. x 70 1\/2 in. x 32 1\/2 in. porcelain tchotchkes sold at auction for $5.6 million in 2001.)<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, legendary art dealer Larry Gagosian, who reps Koons, right, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/07\/03\/arts\/design\/03vogel.html?pagewanted=all\"  target=\"_blank\">told <em>The New York Times<\/em><\/a> back in July that if one of the creations<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>was to come up for sale now, it could make more than $20 million. \u201cAnd that\u2019s conservative,\u201d he added.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more-->Of course, that&#8217;s what someone who gets a piece of every sale is supposed to say, especially during the hype hurricane mere days after Jackson&#8217;s demise.<\/p>\n<p>But, in truth, the art market&#8217;s not doing so well. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601088&amp;sid=azbdRdMTbEN8\"  target=\"_blank\">As Bloomberg.com noted<\/a> in July, quoting  London&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.arttactic.com\/\" onmouseover=\"return escape( popwOpenWebSite( this ))\"  target=\"_blank\">ArtTactic<\/a>, &#8220;Contemporary-art values have tumbled in the last year, with average auction prices down 76.2 percent since May 2008.&#8221; (In May, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601088&amp;sid=aPdKaaaqbv7k\"  target=\"_blank\">Sotheby&#8217;s reported an <em>87% drop<\/em> in second-quarter profits<\/a> compared to a year before, a plummet from which they&#8217;ve only begun to recover.)<\/p>\n<p>That same Bloomberg.com piece featured <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601088&amp;sid=azbdRdMTbEN8\"  target=\"_blank\">Koons, talking postmortem, during a new show, about the reason he&#8217;d made <em>MJ and Bubbles<\/em><\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI wanted to show Michael as a contemporary Christ figure: I wanted to give the viewer a sense of a spiritual authority,\u201d says the soft-spoken Koons, wearing a gray summer suit and a serious expression in an interview at the gallery.<\/p>\n<p>Koons intended the sculpture as a way of \u201cpaying homage to the greatness,\u201d he says. He had watched Jackson moonwalk, and \u201ceverybody\u2019s jaw just dropped, seeing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe type of adulation, the type of support that\u2019s given to pop artists &#8212; this was the contemporary type of support that I thought that Christ would have received in his time,\u201d explains Koons, who says he executed the sculpture in a Renaissance style, its triangular shape reminiscent of Michelangelo\u2019s \u201cPieta.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yeah, his words have got the ring of Koons&#8217; typically doe-eyed, &#8220;golly-gee&#8221; fake wonderment and art blather <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnews.com\/anniversary\/top10.asp\"  target=\"_blank\">that got him rich and famous<\/a>. (People with longer memories or lifespans may recall questions of racism the work sparked, when viewers noted a striking resemblence in it between Bubbles and his owner.)<\/p>\n<p>Despite this provenance, though, or because of it, Jeff Koons is an art world money machine\u2014a thriller, if you will\u2014and the massive <em>MJ and Bubbles<\/em> has got to be the world&#8217;s ultimate Michael Jackson collectible, especially in the recent shadow of his burial.
