Virginians Tracy and Janet <\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/therealnews.com\"  target=\"_blank\"><em>The Real News Network<\/em><\/a> (Motto: &#8220;The Future Depends On Knowing&#8221;) describes itself as &#8220;a television news and documentary network focused on providing independent and uncompromising journalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, it was fitting, a little before this past Tuesday, that TRNN journalist Matthew Palevsky went down to West Virginia to cover what this traditionally blue collar, Democratic-voting bloc was saying about the then upcoming primary. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/matthew-palevsky\/facing-racism-in-america_b_101869.html\"  target=\"_blank\"><em>Huffington Post<\/em><\/a> linked to this video, but <a href=\"http:\/\/therealnews.com\/web\/index.php?thisdataswitch=0&amp;thisid=1507&amp;thisview=item&amp;renewx=2008-05-14+17%3A19%3A41\"  target=\"_blank\"><em>TRNN<\/em>&#8216;s own page<\/a> contains a transcript to the video, part of which is reproduced below.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->As we now know and expected, Hillary Clinton won West Virginia handily; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/05\/14\/us\/politics\/14dems.html?pagewanted=all\"  target=\"_blank\"><em>The New York Times<\/em> called her victory &#8220;lopsided,&#8221;<\/a> noting that this was &#8220;a primary where racial considerations emerged as an unusually salient factor.&#8221; In other words, water is wet.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>TRACY, CLINTON SUPPORTER: My opinion is I think the United States of America should be run by somebody from the United States of America.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: But he&#8217;s from the US. He&#8217;s born here. He&#8217;s been raised here.<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: And he&#8217;s Muslim.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: But why do you think he&#8217;s Muslim? He wasn&#8217;t raised Muslim.<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: But I don&#8217;t agree with that.<\/p>\n<p>JANET: You feel like there&#8217;s a lie behind it.<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: Yeah, I don&#8217;t agree with that.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: Do you think that&#8217;s a smear tactic in politics, to label him as a Muslim?<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: I think it is a smear tactic.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: I mean, but\u2014.<\/p>\n<p>JANET: Do you?<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: Yeah, I do think it&#8217;s a smear tactic, but I think we have the right to know. I mean, I think we have the right to know everything in their background.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Palevsky speaks to other West Virginians, then comes back to the two women.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>PALEVSKY: Will you get behind Obama if he does win the nomination?<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: No.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: Why not?<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: No. I&#8217;ll go Republican.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: You would vote for McCain.<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: Yeah.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: And why? Why that decision for you?<\/p>\n<p>TRACY: I just\u2014I just don&#8217;t agree. That&#8217;s\u2014I&#8217;ll just leave it at that. I just don&#8217;t agree that he should be president of the United States.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At one point in the piece, Palevsky speaks to a Black West Virginian named Brenda.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> PALEVSKY: So whom would you vote for today?<\/p>\n<p>BRENDA, OBAMA SUPPORTER: Obama.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: Why Obama?<\/p>\n<p>BRENDA: &#8216;Cause we need a change.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: And what do you think he&#8217;ll provide for the country?<\/p>\n<p>BRENDA: A better world.<\/p>\n<p>PALEVSKY: And do you think West Virginia will come out for Obama when it comes to the general?<\/p>\n<p>BRENDA: No. There&#8217;s too many rednecks here in West Virginia.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Water.
