{"id":6968,"date":"2010-02-19T17:09:30","date_gmt":"2010-02-19T22:09:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/?p=6968"},"modified":"2010-02-19T17:09:30","modified_gmt":"2010-02-19T22:09:30","slug":"the-is-have-it-what-tiger-woods-really-said-at-his-press-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/?p=6968","title":{"rendered":"The &#8220;I&#8221;s Have It: What Tiger Woods <i>Really<\/i> Said At His Press Conference."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com\/manyeyes\/visualizations\/new\/word-tree\/full-transcript-of-tiger-woodss-st\/1\"  target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6969\" title=\"screen12\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen12.jpg\" alt=\"screen12\" width=\"500\" height=\"418\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen12.jpg 557w, http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen12-300x250.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to go very far into reading the text of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/02\/20\/sports\/golf\/20woodsstatement.html?pagewanted=print\"  target=\"_blank\">Tiger Woods&#8217; apologetic press conference statement<\/a>, made earlier today, to realize that either he, his handlers, or both, knew the word the disgraced athlete needed to say most, in order to win back public trust, was &#8220;I.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s only with <a href=\"http:\/\/manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com\/manyeyes\/visualize\/full-transcript-of-tiger-woodss-st\/versions\/1\"  target=\"_blank\">a textual analyisis of the statement<\/a>, such as the one I put together, above, courtesy of <a href=\"http:\/\/manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com\/manyeyes\/\"  target=\"_blank\">IBM&#8217;s Many Eyes<\/a> software, that it becomes clear how much Woods was relying on conveying a repentant, personal account.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He used the pronoun &#8220;I&#8221; 105 times in the short, 13 1\/2-minute statement<\/strong>, or an average of about once ever eight seconds. Looking at his most common subjective couplet, &#8220;I have,&#8221; below\u2014said 16 times\u2014it appears that Woods was attempting to forge an empathetic bond with those listening to his statement by affirming the words they had probably said about him in his absence: You <em>bitterly disappointed<\/em> us&#8230;you <em>brought this on yourself<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com\/manyeyes\/visualizations\/new\/word-tree\/full-transcript-of-tiger-woodss-st\/1\"  target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6971\" title=\"screen21\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen21.jpg\" alt=\"screen21\" width=\"500\" height=\"304\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen21.jpg 750w, http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen21-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Or check out Woods second-most frequently-used couplet, &#8220;I am,&#8221; below, where he talks about his present state.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen32.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6972\" title=\"screen32\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen32.jpg\" alt=\"screen32\" width=\"500\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen32.jpg 647w, http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen32-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Finally, study Tiger&#8217;s mentions of his wife&#8217;s name, Elin, and the complimentary contexts within which Woods praised her.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/manyeyes.alphaworks.ibm.com\/manyeyes\/visualizations\/new\/word-tree\/full-transcript-of-tiger-woodss-st\/1\"  target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-6979\" title=\"screen42\" src=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen42.jpg\" alt=\"screen42\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" srcset=\"http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen42.jpg 672w, http:\/\/harryallen.info\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/02\/screen42-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Verbally, at least, it seems like Woods knew what he had to say about what he did, how he feels about it, and how he feels about his wife. These were the most important statements for him to make, it can be argued. (He certainly seemed to think so: He only mentioned &#8220;golf&#8221; twice.)<\/p>\n<p>Though you heard it, and read it in the statement, the Many Eyes software, with this straightforward formatting, creates a slightly better sense of how Woods&#8217; words were organized, and to what end.
