Don’t let anybody lie to you: Indian sisters get down<\/em>. Or, at least they do in Bollywood movies. I learned this the evening I walked into a screening of Shakti: The Power<\/em>, literally by accident.<\/p>\n I’d gone to the movies at Virgin Megastore in Times Square, and they gave me the wrong ticket, or something; I don’t really remember. I just know I didn’t ask to see the movie, nor would I have known to do so.<\/p>\n I’d never seen an Indian musical in the theaters before Krishna Vamsi’s 2002 film. While I found the rest of the movie pretty interesting, and often gripping, this “item number”<\/a> \/ dance sequence, featuring the rapturous Aishwarya Rai<\/a> as “Dream Girl,” knocked me on my behind.<\/p>\n Nothing and no one, in my opinion, moves, on-screen or off-, like Black women. So, when I say “sisters,” above, I’m doing it with affection and respect. The entire display was awash with hot color, rippling energy, feverish moves, and barely oppressed sexual desire.<\/p>\n In fact, if you’ve never seen “Ishq Kameena,”<\/a> unless your internet connection gives you perfectly stutter-free YouTube playback, spring for the DVD<\/a>, and hurriedly press “play.” You will<\/em> get your money’s worth.<\/p>\n
