In “Keeping Up with the Jones: White Supremacy on BET,”<\/a> Bro. Tony Muhammad both regards the promotion of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/em>, which opened yesterday, and captures that distinct, tacky awkwardness one feels when white people, especially ones who’ve never been to Harlem, try to act like they’re used to being surrounded by Black people, especially when it’s being done for marketing purposes.<\/p>\n

He starts by telling how a friend<\/p>\n

was flipping through channels on my living room television set and just so happened to land on BET. He quickly called me over to pay special attention to what was taking place on the screen.<\/p>\n

The first obvious thing I noticed was that this was a special 106 and Park<\/em> show, promoting the release of the movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull<\/em>. The first thought that came to my mind was that this was rather unusual, considering that all of the main characters in the film are white.<\/p>\n

This is Black Entertainment Television after all right???<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Singer Ashanti is part of the proceedings, and<\/p>\n

After Ashanti\u2019s performance Shia LaBeouf, who plays Indiana Jones\u2019 sidekick Mutt Williams, was brought up on stage. He was asked to kick a freestyle, but refused.<\/p>\n

Instead, he did the \u201cCrip Walk.\u201d<\/p>\n

The audience cheered.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
