“What unites us is greater than what divides us!”

Fruit. Tree.

Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., above, said this last night, near the end of his speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, speaking of Americans.

Now, here’s my question, to anyone who’ll take it:

Is this a true statement?

That is:

a) What unites us?

b) What divides us?

c) Is the former actually greater than the latter?

d) What is the proof of the same?

We are both united and divided by our common history as a nation and as individuals, even though we as individuals view that history from vastly different viewpoints.

Of course the former is stronger than the latter. We cannot change the past. We can only look back with regret at the tragic mistakes in our nations history, but we should look forward with hope, work to undo the mistakes of the past and work to make a better life for the kids coming along behind us.

Proof? That’s a tough one. Like Senator Obama, I’m the son of a single mother who struggled to provide for her kids, and I’m only a couple years younger than the Senator. When he talks about the struggles of his mother, he could be talking about my mother, my family, and it speaks right to my heart.

I don’t know if that is proof, but it is proof enough for me. I identify with that guy and I am united with him and the millions of Americans who support him and hope for change.

Go Obama!

This statement is true…in theory.

That is, it sounds good on paper.

But, then again, so does socialism.

John McCain shamelessly stole this heart-warming line in his speech at the RNC:
“much more unites us than divides us”

The night after Palin gave a classic divisive speech.

some statements are just facts in of themselves… The Sun gives light, life goes on, what unites us is greater than what many think is their cause du jour for division…. wake up people – figure out what unifies us before it is too late – and – hint… it is not a person. join in unity…
