Drooled On by an Autotroph.

“HEY!! Gimme some privacy! I’m evolving!”

I’m not really a true fan of CBS’s The Big Bang Theory (Mondays, 8 pm ET), and haven’t even watched a full episode yet. But every time I see it come on, I blast its uber-cool intro.

The visuals compress the history of the universe into a 20-second home movie of galactic clusters, protozoa, b-boys, and bullet trains. Meanwhile the theme, “Big Bang Theory,” sung by Barenaked Ladies in their quintessentially hyper-wordy, ideosyncratic style, elucidate most of what you missed by being born within the last ten thousand years:

Our whole universe was in a hot dense state,
Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started…
Wait!
The Earth began to cool,
The autotrophs began to drool,
Neanderthals developed tools,
We built a wall (we built the pyramids!),
Math, science, history, unraveling the mystery
That all started with the Big Bang!

The creative success of the song led the Ladies to record a 1:45, full-length version that you can hear on this YouTube, and see with their extended lyrics. It’s true, autotrophs (plants) don’t drool, but that makes the song better, ’cause it’s a goof. Hey: Ultimately, it’s all about the groove.

You don’t know what you are missing. The Big Bang Theory is the funniest show on TV. Check it out Mondays on CBS at 8:00 ET/PT. You will see what it is about. Pure hilarity.

It’s true, this is a very funny show. It’s my favorite of what’s on right now. It makes Monday something to look forward to. Also true that the theme song is awesome. I think the idea of the autotrophs drooling is an indication of evolution starting at the most basic form of life to the upwardly-mobile bipeds we are today. It’s saying that basic plantlife grew into creatures which became animals. It’s a lot of history to fit into 20 seconds.

I agree with the other statements. Big Bang Theory is fantastic. The witty writing and the delivery from the actors makes for pure hilarity.
