The Devil Wears Payless: Anna Wintour’s Doppelganger Writes In

Twice as nice
Twice as nice: Somebody’s pretending they run VOGUE

Thought I’d show faithful MEDIA ASSASSIN readers something that came through here last month.

On April 10, I received this. You can click on and read it:

Tell us all about it…

Before and AfterIt’s a response, sent to my comments file, about my post “Monkey See, Monkey Doo-Doo: How VOGUE ‘Honoured’ LeBron James by Smearing Black People with White Supremacy & Gorilla Feces,” which criticized the racist basis of the magazine’s LeBron James Giselle Bündchen cover, right.

The note says:

Anna Wintour | a.wintor@condenast.com | IP: 68.48.250.72

Well those Ne—-, African Americans, are such an athletic people. We just wanted to show that their athletic prowess affords them better bodies. I mean, they do have smaller brains…just like our drugged out models

Sincerely,

The Editors of Vogue

I quickly noted two points:

1) It’s not from Anna Wintour, much as I’d like it to be, but someone pretending to be her. In the e-mail address, peep the misspelling of her last name as “Wintor.” (That is, unless she has an account, with her last name misspelled on purpose, just for special occasions like this one.)

2) Whoever sent this appears to have utilized Conde Nast’s legitimate domain, condenast.com, not a lookalike. Clicking on it takes you right to their home page. That means someone at the company, or with access to their servers, is sending out e-mails, impersonating the head of their flagship publication. Nice.

I think this is kind of serious, actually. Hopefully, reproducing the IP address in this post won’t lead their IT security team directly to them.

But, then again, maybe Anna Wintour doesn’t mind people pretending that they’re her, and sending out notes which say African Americans are “an athletic people” who “have smaller brains.” I’ve heard that she, and the FBI, have fabulous senses of humor, especially when it comes to identity theft.

Harry, you’re becoming a regular stop for me. Thought you might want this. Out of curiosity, I did a whois search on that IP address, and this was the result:

OrgName: Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.
OrgID: CMCS
Address: 1800 Bishops Gate Blvd
City: Mt Laurel
StateProv: NJ
PostalCode: 08054
Country: US

NetRange: 68.32.0.0 – 68.63.255.255
CIDR: 68.32.0.0/11

What the above means is that the person who left the comment was surfing from a home hookup, most likely, and they are probably a Comcast customer based in New Jersey.

Are you saying the condenast domain is where it came from based on the from address?

It’s ridiculously easy to fake an email sender addresses.

also easy to fake multiple addresses though. 🙂
