He is talking about the role it plays for getting into the music industry, which for me is something completely different from ‘hip hop success’.
@KRZ Point taken, and remember for those not “in the game”, getting in IS success, or, at the very least, a marker that they are headed in the direction of success. And for a “hungry” artist, the nuance is not their chief focus/concern.
