Girls Gone Wild: “Ishq Kameena,” from Shakti: The Power

I can’t believe my eye…
Tell me I’m not dreaming: Shahrukh Khan’s mind’s about to be blown

Don’t let anybody lie to you: Indian sisters get down. Or, at least they do in Bollywood movies. I learned this the evening I walked into a screening of Shakti: The Power, literally by accident.

I’d gone to the movies at Virgin Megastore in Times Square, and they gave me the wrong ticket, or something; I don’t really remember. I just know I didn’t ask to see the movie, nor would I have known to do so.

I’d never seen an Indian musical in the theaters before Krishna Vamsi’s 2002 film. While I found the rest of the movie pretty interesting, and often gripping, this “item number” / dance sequence, featuring the rapturous Aishwarya Rai as “Dream Girl,” knocked me on my behind.

Nothing and no one, in my opinion, moves, on-screen or off-, like Black women. So, when I say “sisters,” above, I’m doing it with affection and respect. The entire display was awash with hot color, rippling energy, feverish moves, and barely oppressed sexual desire.

In fact, if you’ve never seen “Ishq Kameena,” unless your internet connection gives you perfectly stutter-free YouTube playback, spring for the DVD, and hurriedly press “play.” You will get your money’s worth.
